Our story
Hertop Sports Centre is run by Hertfordshire Microlight Club Ltd, but people know us for something closer to the ground: a place to shake off the week. From our base on a working airfield, we offer flying lessons, youth programmes and weekend brunch to anyone who lands here looking for a proper day out.
The club started as a runway and a caravan that brewed tea strong enough to fuel a morning flight. When that second cup started coming with a menu, and the grass outside turned into places to land a racket or run off the cakes, we couldn't keep the sport and the breakfast canteen apart. Today the kettle still goes on at sunrise because that is when the air is calmest, not because we took a business class.
Every flying lesson begins with a written briefing in the back room — the goal sheet, the weather briefing, the callback if conditions look dicey than the forecast. Downstairs, the brunch menu keeps parents and pilots properly fed, while the sprint and junior sports sessions make muddy trainers entirely acceptable. The welcome sign at the door reads ninety-percent breakfast, but the T-bars and smoke detectors think otherwise.
Microlighting is all about feeling the controls and minding the weather dial. You do not need a league table mentality; a lucky penny that fits the slot suits us well. It's this looser, genial pace that we've protected since converting the team from cereal enthusiasts.
